Description
1857 revenue book for Orange County, Florida. Book contains information on the monetary worth of all taxable property in the county, the commensurate amount of state and county taxes paid by the property owners. Each property owner's total state and county tax obligations are tallied along the right-hand side of each double-page. The total amount for each property category is found tallied at the bottom of the page. Approaching the end of the book, one finds categories listed vertically down the left-hand sidde of the double-page with total county amounts, per page, for each category. After this, one finds categories listed vertically down the left-hand side of the double-page with total county amounts per category listed across the pages horizontally. The last two pages contain two sets of information. One is a list of back taxes for four individuals for 1856. The other is an official signed certification that the information listed in the revenue book is accurate. The following column headings are found in the book: All white males, over 21 and under 50 years--except paupers, idiotic and insane persons 50 cents each; All real estate, comprising lands and improvements, buildings, manufactories, and mills of all kinds, distillieries, furnaces, machinery, tan-yards, ferries, toll-bridges and wharves 1-6th of 1 per cent or 16 2/3 cents upon the $100 in value; all slaves 1-6th of 1 per cent. upon value; all money at interest or in possession 1-6th of 1 percent. upon amount; all notes and obligations of whatever character 1-6th of 1 per cent. upon amount; all capital employed in trade by merchants and traders of every description 1-6th of 1 per cent. upon amount; all capital invested in steamships, steamboats, sail vessels, lighters, and barges 1-6th of 1 per cent. upon amount. all pleasure carriages, stage coaches, wagons, carts and drays 1-6th of 1 per cent. upon value; all horses, asses, mules, neat cattle, swine and sheep 1-6th of 1 per cent. upon value; all household furniture, including gold and silver, plate, and musical instruments 1-6th of 1 per cent. upon value; all watches 1-6th of 1 per cent. upon value; on drafts and bills of exchange drawn in this state upon any place beyond its limits, 5 cents on every $100 bought of sold during the year next before the date of assessment; free negroes and mulattoes $3.30 each; cattle of non-residents 50 cents per head; agenices, foreign insurance companies 2 per cent. on all premiums received during the year next before the date of assessment: provided, the tax shall not be less than $10.
