Multiple Resources Questionnaire; Subjective workload

Abstract

There are various questionnaires that can be used to assess an individuals’ workload when performing a task or set of tasks. One such measure is the Multiple Resources Questionnaire (MRQ , Boles & Adair, 2001). The MRQ was developed to address the diagnostic limitations of other workload measures (such as the NASA-Task Load Index) and consists of 17 items to determine which perceptual and cognitive resources a task involves. Furthermore, the measure can be used to identify areas that should be addressed to alleviate overload of specific resources. Thus, the MRQ serves to provide unique workload information not obtainable via other workload instruments. Since its initial introduction in 2001, a review of the extant use of the MRQ has yet to be performed. To address this need, we conducted a systematic review of the literature on how researchers have used the MRQ in terms of item selection, administration, scoring, and analysis. Results of our review indicate that there is wide variation across all of these areas. Examples of differences in use include the use of different scale values for items (0-4 vs. 0-100) and using only a subset of the original 17 items. The purpose of this poster is to share the results of our review, to provide suggestions to researchers interested in using the MRQ for subjective workload assessment, and suggest areas in need of additional research.
