Abstract
In "Seasons of Real Florida" (University Press of Florida, 2004), award-winning journalist Jeff Klinkenberg brings stories of Florida to life in a series of vignettes originally written for the St. Petersburg Times. As one might guess from the title, the articles are organized by season (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter) and offer a glimpse into Florida's unique cultural perspective. In a style ranging from poignant to humorous, Klinkenberg offers the reader a variety of accounts, including those of unique Florida locals like the Shell Woman, artists like imprisoned Florida Highwayman painter Al Black, and such classic writers as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Ernest Hemingway. The author does an excellent job of giving readers a real taste of Florida life in the 20th and 21st centuries, and reminds us that the state is more than just theme parks, sandy beaches and golf courses.
