Abstract
What is metadata? Is it different from descriptive cataloging in MARC? This presentation will explore how traditional cataloging skills can be applied to the growing world of next-gen metadata services. It will examine how traditional descriptive cataloging is itself metadata and how catalogers and technical services librarians can utilize their skill-sets and knowledge base to make unique and important contributions in other areas of metadata description. In addition, this presentation will explore how non-catalogers can be utilized for metadata projects. This serves as an overview of metadata and will help us re-conceptualize the way we think about content description. This presentation will further explore this topic with specific examples of non-MARC projects from various institutions.
