Abstract

This session showcases Dr. Malone's use of Twine on the Twitch live-streaming platform in one of her game-design classes at University of Wisconsin. It offers an occasion to consider Twine as a teaching tool, a demonstration of live design as a teaching method, and a view of Twitch as an academic platform. Malone and Moulthrop will each speak for about 5 minutes at the beginning of the session to set context for the video, which will run about 30 minutes. The presenters will take questions for 15-20 minutes after the video. No special technology will need to be downloaded or used by participants for the presentation, however if anyone is interested in knowing more here are links to various relevant sites:

Bio

Krista-Lee Malone is a faculty associate member teaching for the Game Design certificate at the University of Wisconsin. Her research includes studies on raiding guilds in World of Warcraft, the making of educational games in Taiwan, and gender issues on the live-streaming platform Twitch.tv. While in Taiwan she also worked as a cultural consultant (read: writer, editor, voice-actor, translator, curriculum developer, and quest designer) for an educational MMORPG and as a corporate English instructor. In addition to teaching, Dr. Malone is currently working on designing accessible games for classrooms and using game design in the social sciences.

Stuart Moulthrop is Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is co-author with Anastasia Salter of the forthcoming Twining: Critical and Creative Approaches. He was a founding board member of ELO and is a well known author of digital fiction, theory, and criticism. He and Dr. Malone are members of the Digital Cultures Collaboratory in the Center for 21st Studies at UW-Milwaukee, which hosts the Serious Play channel on the Twitch network.
