Abstract
The axiom that male poeciliid fishes cease growth after becoming sexually mature is often repeated in the literature, but there is little empirical support. I investigated sexual differences in growth rates in newborn and adult Poecilia latipinna under laboratory conditions. In neonates, the sexes grew at approximately equal rates. In adults, females grew 2-3 times faster than males. However, growth rates of mature males were variable during the experiment and in some cases equaled those of females. Small and large mature males grew at approximately equal relative rates in the second and third experimental growth periods, and all males grew significantly during the study. The literature reveals that males of two other poeciliid species, Xiphophorus maculatus and X. variatus, also exhibit indeterminate growth.
