Abstract

Demography of Peromyscus gossypinus, Ochrotomys nuttalli, Peromyseus floridanus, and Glaucomys volans was studied for 2 years on replicate grids in sand pine scrub habitat in central Florida. After 1 year, sunflower seeds were provided to the rodent on one grid. Minimum numbers of P. gossypinus increased an average of 46% on the food supplement grid, whereas numbers on the control grid declined 27%. The population increase was due to immigration. Abundance of O. nuttalli was not increased by the supplemental food; however, survival was enhanced and within-grid movements were reduced. Peromyscus floridanus appeared on the study area during the experiment, but failed to establish a resident population. Because the supplemental food was not directly accessible to G. volans, no response to its presence was observed. Ochrotomys nuttalli appeared not to be food limited under the conditions of the experiment, whereas P. gossypinus appeared to be food limited.
