    Abstract

The grief of those anticipating the loss of a loved one with a chronic, debilitating illness has received little research attention to date. The present study provides empirical evidence of the intensity, nature and persistence of anticipatory grief among caregivers of persons with dementia. The impact of two stressors of caregiving on the course of anticipatory grief is also examined. Finally, based on the results, practitioners are given guidance in identifying caregivers most at risk for unresolved grief.
