    Abstract

The dynamics of second harmonic generation in strongly dispersive optical waveguides is investigated with a coupled-mode theory in frequency domain. In addition to the well-known energy exchange between the fundamental and the second harmonic, the parametric wave mixing causes nonlinear phase shifts. This nonlinear refraction can compensate for the group velocity dispersion which counteracts pulse broadening and leads to temporal soliton-like pulse propagation. Special properties, conditions, limits and applications for soliton propagation in integrated optics due to the cascaded second-order nonlinearity are discussed.
