    Abstract

    A variational principle for Rossby waves in beta-plane approximation is formulated. Special attention is given to particular situations in water waves. Some conservation laws are derived from full nonlinear equations of Rossby waves. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
