    Abstract

We report the results of experiments that directly probe the spatial and temporal evolution of the electron density in a capillary discharge soft x-ray amplifier. A sub-ps laser at 422 nm was used in combination with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to perform pulsed laser interferometry of a capillary discharge amplifier operated at the conditions observed to produce gain in Ne-like Ar at 46.9 nm. A sequence of interferograms was obtained which maps the entire evolution of the electron density distribution during excitation by a fast current pulse.
