Abstract
A novel type of antenna-coupled infrared detector consisting of a niobium microbolometer integrated with two microstrip patch antennas is reported. This is the first microstrip antenna structure proven to detect thermal infrared radiation. A polarisation ratio of > 20:1 and a time constant of < 150ns have been measured for this type of detector.
