    Abstract

This paper examines factors influencing the demand for commercial aircraft in the U.S. using a recursive supply and demand model. Of particular interest is whether the recent increase in demand reflects a replacement cycle of an ageing jet fleet or reflects the increased traffic and changed aircraft needs following airline deregulation. Cyclical replacement does not appear to be an important factor. The growth in, and changing structure of, domestic air travel following deregulation is primarily responsible for recent increases in aircraft demand.
