Abstract
Traditional approaches to financial management do not address present-day challenges posed by the limits on Medicare and other third-party reimbursements, nor do they address the ever-present and growing requirements of requirements of accountability for patient billings. The Resource-Based Relative Value Scales (RBRVS)-also known as the Physician Payment Reform Provisions-were enacted by Congress in 1989-as part of a decade-long effort to revamp Medicare Part B payments for outpatient services. RBRVS affords healthcare providers a unique opportunity to conduct financial and performance comparisons between organizations of varying size and administrative complexity, and to establish a consistent financial analysis mechanism, the use of which is limited only by the ability of the provider organization to access the necessary data.
