    Abstract

The order parameters describing the two-dimensional orientation of rod-like poly[bis(m-butoxyphenyl)silane] molecules in Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers are determined via polarization dependent resonant third-harmonic generation. The nature of the local field factor for the polysilane backbone is determined by analyzing the phase of chi(3). By investigating the imaginary part of chi(3) we were able to isolate the first and second nontrivial order parameters C2 an C4 describing the orientation of the rod-like polysilane backbone only. Annealing the LB film subsequent to deposition increases both order parameters but does not change the local field factor.
