    Abstract

The study explores the self-esteem of those preparing to teach, specifically, college education majors in their junior and senior years. The relationship between self-esteem and race, gender, and type of institution (public or private) for education majors and non-education majors (represented by those in business, engineering, or liberal arts) are examined. Overall, the self-esteem of education majors was significantly higher than noneducation majors. For education majors, self-esteem was higher for students attending private college than public college, but non race or gender differences were demonstrated for self-esteem. Implications for future research are suggested.
