    Abstract

The evolution of AIDS as a social problem has been consistent in its group-symbolic connection to homosexuals. Attitudes toward gays are found to be strongly related to opinions about AIDS-infected school children, a group having nothing in common with homosexuals-save for the shared emblem of the disease. Furthermore, citizens who are the most politically involved are more polarized on this AIDS-related issue than are less sophisticated members of the public.
