Abstract
To minimize spread of infection, medical waste must be carefully managed. Current waste management practices involve a hierarchy that includes waste reduction, waste treatment, and ultimately, landfilling. The modern landfill is designed to control emissions and minimize adverse effects on the environment. This article provides an overview of the fate of medical waste once it is placed in a municipal solid waste landfill.
