Abstract
According to most sources, the entire US healthcare industry and specifically, physician groups (e.g., dialysis centers)-is facing a very turbulent environment, with no signs of relief in the near future. One effort to streamline costs and strategically position organizations to face this turbulent environment call be found in the formation of organizational alliances. This article presents a new model-the Physician Alliance Continuum-that combines the transaction cost model and the exchange model, allowing the dialysis center administrator to better understand the costs and benefits of alliances. A range of different alliances are discussed, from "market" to "contract" to "hierarchical," and examples are provided for each type of distinct physician alliance. By using the Physician Alliance Continuum model, dialysis centers will be better equipped to determine what type of physician alliance is best in order to help them attain the goal of continuing to provide high-quality, high-satisfaction patient encounters while streamlining costs and strategically positioning themselves for the future.
