Abstract
Simulations, which by their very nature embody interdisciplinary instruction, address the Connections strand of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning. The author draws from numerous different content areas in the development of a four-to-six-week-long unit whose culminating activity is a simulated Mexican cafe. Students assume the roles of restaurant personnel and greet customers, take and fill orders, cook a variety of Mexican entrees, tally the check, and make change, all in the target language while exhibiting culturally appropriate demeanor. The unit activities are delineated within the article.
