    Abstract

Random electromagnetic fields can always be decomposed into polarized and unpolarized components. Therefore, one can, at all times, associate with any field a degree of polarization which measures the relative energy density (intensity) in the polarized component. It should not be expected, however, that this degree of polarization can provide a complete description of the electromagnetic field characteristics. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
