    Abstract

A ceramic nanocomposite reinforced with about 20 vol.% of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) is fabricated by infiltrating CNF-preform with liquid-phased polymeric precursor following by pyrolysis. The nanocomposite has a dense structure without micro-cracks. The results from the microindentation tests reveal that the nanocomposite has lower indentation hardness but higher fracture energy than the non-reinforced ceramic. The effect of the CFTs on the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite has been discussed. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
