    Abstract

Government regulation has become one of the most discussed policy areas since the recent financial crisis. This symposium examines policy and managerial issues related to regulatory challenges, especially in the financial sector. This introduction to the symposium reviews major issues in government regulation-including motives, types, and consequences of regulation, inflation and costs, and effectiveness-and summarizes the findings of the four articles in the symposium. In addition to conceptual arguments about the financial crisis and related regulatory and governance challenges, the articles present case studies about citizen participation in regulatory decision-making and the use of e-government to improve transparency in financial industries, and offer suggestions and lessons about regulatory management and reform.
