The relationship of age and gender to sex guilt

Abstract

A wide range of studies have been completed examining sex guilt and some of them have touched on the differences in sex guilt scores for people of various ages and experience levels. Some of the studies suggested that experience and number of sexual partners may be negatively related to sex guilt. Since age may afford individuals the advantage of a gain in experience, age may be a factor in sex guilt scores. Other studies have examined the relationship of gender and sex guilt and the results seem to vary from finding comparable sex guilt scores for the genders to finding that females tend to report higher sex guilt than males. Based on this information, two hypotheses regarding sex-guilt scores, age and gender, were tested. The first hypothesis was that as age increases, sex-guilt scores decrease, and the second hypothesis was that women would have higher mean sex-guilt scores than men. One hundred twenty-six (126) undergraduate students volunteered to complete a self report survey. The results of the regressions run on the data collected showed that overall, there was no significant difference in scores either by age or by gender. Further research in this area would benefit from sample groups with diverse backgrounds, educational levels and age groups. Future research involving both sex guilt and sex shame would also be of value.
