The development of the thai political economy : can it match the nics success
Abstract
This paper is an effort to facilitate a better understanding of the nature of economic development and growth in the Southeast Asian countries, particularly Thailand. In order to accomplish this task, an analysis will first be done of the Asian newly industrializing countries (NI Cs )--Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and
Singapore--whicb have experienced rapid economic development over the past several decades. In particular, the first part of the research analyzes the effectiveness of NIC development strategies from a historical-structural perspective, with an emphasis on the impact of state strategy, social class, and foreign powers on economic performance. The second part will then utilize this framework for Southeast Asian countries in general and Thailand in particular. The study is organized into 6 chapters. Chapter 1 is a general overview of development in Third World countries. In particular, we examine the economic development dilemmas faced by most LDCs and distinguish between LDCs in terms of present capacity and future potential. Chapter 2 lays out the levels of analysis necessary for examining development: the world system, the state, and the society. We need to see bow developments at each level affects a country's ability to find its place in world system and bow they interact with each other. Chapter 3 briefly discusses the major theories which have been put forward to
xplain Third World development: liberal, neo-Weberian, Marxist, and dependency. In particular, we consider these theories in light of success of East Asian NICs. In addition, we raise several questions which will be answered in the remainder of the paper about Third World developmental strategies. Chapter 4 provides an overview of the East Asian NIC pattern of development. We ask in particular what strategies they have used to achieve respectable rates of economic growth in the past few years. We conclude with an assessment of future development in the East Asian NICs. Chapter 5 surveys the general economic situation of Southeast Asia. Finally, chapter 6 analyzes the relative success of Thai economic strategies and the obstacles for future economic growth. In particular, we seek to answer the question of whether Thailand can emulate the NICs.
