Decision Support Systems: Applications In Statistics And Hypothesis Testing

Abstract

This paper concerns a system developed to assist in the selection of appropriate statistical procedures required for certain problems. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups. One group was given a flow chart version of the decision aid; a second group was given a computer-based version of the system. A control group had access only to a statistics text. Comparisons of subjects’ performance on a test which required the determination of statistical hypotheses and test statistics revealed significant differences between the control mean and both experimental group means. No difference was found between the performance of the flow chart user group and the computer-user group. The research does appear to support the assertion that a decision aid can be constructed which will facilitate the use of statistics by educational practitioners. © 1988 Taylor & Francis.
