Title
Thermoelasticity In Metals And Interatomic Attraction In A Normal Gas
Abstract
The internal energy U of a monatomic gas that obeys PV=RT can be written alternatively as U=3RT/2=3PV/2. Analyses of the second functional representation show that, contrary to present views, U is a function of V and also of P. An insight into the physical nature of the dependence of U on V is provided by a corresponding thermodynamic analysis of data on the thermoelastic effect in iron. The fact that U is a function of volume requires that extensive changes be made in present treatments of kinetic theory, statistical mechanics, and other aspects of science.
