Title

Low Cost Visual System For General Aviation Flight Simulation

Abstract

The use of synthetic images in simulation-based trainers is a proven practice. However, the current costs of such devices lie in the range of between one to seven million dollars per installation. This is due to: (1) the high complexity of the simulation device, and (2) the small production quantities for custom built electronic implementations. With the new opportunities afforded by improving technology, real time graphics image generating systems are available with low cost personal computer (PC) based systems. One such system is 3DViewII from XTAR Electronics. In this paper we describe our experience in using 3DViewII graphic system in terms of its application and limitation as it has been applied to a flight simulation project. We also discuss the use of AutoCAD as a front-end tool in developing the image database.
