Title

Stability Of Beams In An Elastic Foundation

Abstract

This paper describes a finite element code for a beam on elastic foundation, and illustrates its application in assessing the behavior of structures embedded in its foundation, as it responds to the imposed loads. Results from the computer code indicate that, at several locations along the length of a structure, plastic hinges may form in response to the imposed loads. At each plastic hinge, failure is assumed. Since the code is developed to treat elements with real or plastic hinges, it is used for a second analysis in which the structure is modeled with plastic hinges introduced at the locations of failure. This procedure is repeated until all the plastic hinges are detected. Though the plastic hinges signal material failure at specific locations, the structure can usually safely carry the imposed loads, acting as a hinged linkage, embedded in an elastic foundation.
