Title

Four-wavelength, 10-GHz picosecond pulse generation from an active modelocked single-stripe diode laser

Abstract

A wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) semiconductor laser based on a single-stripe semiconductor travelling wave optical amplifier generating four WDM channels was studied. Stable pulses were generated by actively mode-locking a grating-loaded external cavity laser system at 2.5 GHz. Pulsewidths of approximately 18 ps were observed for the composite four wavelength output and for each individual wavelength output. The active mode-locking-induced transient unsaturated gain was found to be the key mechanism underlying the stable multiwavelength picosecond pulse generation in the single-stripe diode laser.
