Title
Recent advances in external cavity modelocked lasers using a semiconductor optical amplifiers
Abstract
Semiconductor optical amplifiers with external cavity have low facet reflectivity requirement suitable for semiconductor laser diodes. The intracavity gain, saturable absorption, intracavity pulse shapes and spectrograms for the laser were obtained by measuring the compressed output of the modelocked diode laser. Time resolved gain and saturable measurements were performed. The nonlinearity associated with gain depletion, coupled with group velocity dispersion led to the generation of asymmetric pulse shapes with quasi-parabolic instantaneous frequency chirp, while saturable absorption and GVD linearized the chirp. The intracavity dynamics allowed the development of an external cavity modelocked diode laser that produced four tunable wavelength.
