Title
Two dimensional digital micromirror device-based 2×2 fiber-optic switch array
Abstract
The rapid maturity of microelectromechanical fabrication techniques and devices has opened up new possibilities for optical systems such as fiber optic switches. The advantages of micromachine-based optical switches include polarization independence, high isolation, compactness, and low power consumption. A novel digital micromirror device (DMD)-based 2×2 fiber optic switch array system is proposed. The Texas Instrument 2D DMD has half a million micromirrors which is 16 μm×16 μm in size with a pixel pitch of 17 μm. It has two states of operation (+10° and -10°) with a 15 μs switching speed and approximately 62% optical efficiency.
