Title

Sizing solar pool heating systems in Florida with validated heuristics

Abstract

This paper presents development of heuristic algorithms from equations provided in the literature for the evaluation of solar systems for heating residential pools in Florida. Of the computer programs previously available to evaluate solar pool systems, none directly solve for solar system size and the resultant energy savings available from a correctly sized solar system. Each existing system requires technical engineering inputs and an iterative process to arrive at the proper solar size. This new approach solves directly for the solar system size needed to meet the requirements of a particular pool and its user's needs. Individual heat loss equations were validated with field data from fourteen outdoor pools and incorporated into a pool heat loss simulation program driven by weather data. It was found that a single equation was insufficient to predict pool response. For each weather set, sixteen heuristic algorithms were regressed from a data set of swimmable months developed through multiple simulations of an orthogonal matrix of pool conditions, temperatures and configurations. These and other heuristic rules were incorporated into a computer-based advisory system to simplify inputs and present results, thus providing a marketing tool to aid in the proper sizing and the increased sale of solar pool heating systems. The resultant advisory system and its heuristic algorithms were independently validated by three experts at the UCF Florida Solar Energy Center, and a questionnaire was used to obtain validation from solar contractors. Of the contractors that responded, all found the advisory system to be easy to use and understandable. Seventy-five percent said it would be a valuable sales tool.
