Title

Measurement of infrared irradiance and its effect on unglazed solar collector performance

Abstract

The significance of daytime infrared radiation exchange between an unglazed solar collector and its surrounding environment has been analytically investigated by a number of researchers in both North America and Europe. However, the United States' consensus solar collector test method, ANSI/ASHRAE 96-1980 (Reaffirmed 1989), does not yet account for this heat transfer effect in the determination of thermal performance. To demonstrate the necessity of revising the existing test method, an analysis of five year's of measured infrared irradiance data taken during mid-day outdoor collector testing conditions in Florida is presented. The considerable variation in these measurements establishes the need for modifying the total irradiance that is determined at the time of the thermal performance test. The methodology for performing this proposed modification involves measuring the infrared irradiance in the plane of the collector with a properly calibrated pyrgeometer.
