Title
Economic assessment of advanced electrolytic hydrogen production
Abstract
Cost of electrolytic hydrogen production has been analysed for three major advanced technologies, the advanced alkaline water electrolyser, the solid polymer electrolyser and the high temperature electrolyser. The cost analysis emphasizes photovoltaics (PV) as the electrical energy source and is done on a consistent and uniform basis. The other key features of the cost analysis are a careful evaluation of the critical cost-contributing parameters, the incorporation of the latest technological improvements that are realizable in practice, a reasonable scale-up procedure and a detailed process optimization for the solid polymer electrolyser. Results show that the current projected costs of electrolytic hydrogen production in a large commercial unit range from $3.00 to $3.25 kg-1 of liquid hydrogen irrespective of the advanced technology used, based on an electricity cost of 50 mills kWh-1. Results further show that future costs of hydrogen production by PV electricity or PV and grid combination can be competitive with that by grid electricity. © 1990.
