Title

Design Of Saw Fir Filters For Quadrature Binary Modulation Systems

Abstract

Full response signaling quadrature binary modulation (QBM) systems, which include QPSK, MSK, and SFSK, have applications in MODEM'S, direct sequence spread spectrum, and microwave communications. Effective quadrature binary modulators are characterized by modulated signal waveforms with little intersymbol interference, good envelope uniformity, accurate spectral response, and good dynamic range. SAW filters are ideally suited for these systems since precise time-domain responses can be achieved. In addition, SAW filter designs can often compensate for system implementation distortion, such as spectral roll-off or matching. This yields near ideal time-and frequency-domain responses. Finally, it is relatively easy to implement any SAW FIR response for the required system. This paper presents several SAW FIR filter design techniques for full response signaling QBM systems. The design approaches for several standard modulator filters, such as QPSK and MSK, as well as several newly developed FIR modulator filters, will be compared. The design procedures, including zero extraction, are discussed. Experimental and theoretical results for five different SAW filter modulator designs are presented and show excellent time and frequency-domain correlation. © 1993 IEEE
