Title
Cognition, Competition, And Coordination: The "Why" And The "How" Of The Relevance Of The Sports Sciences To Learning And Performance In The Military
Abstract
Research emerging from the sports sciences and related disciplines has developed a rich and robust body of knowledge related to human performance. Nonetheless, there is a surprising paucity of cross-disciplinary interaction between researchers in the sports sciences and the military. The purpose of this invited special issue is to redress this gap via the presentation of articles by leadin sports researchers discussing their own and related work in the context of the military. The cognitive processes arising within complex and dynamic environments are the focus of this special issue. To ground these discussions, in this lead article we discuss the epistemological context of this cross-disciplinary endeavor. First we briefly describe the overarching issues linking these seemingly disparate fields and we then discuss the contributions to this special issue.
