Title

Transgenic Plants For Mercury Phytoremediation

Abstract

In order to increase plants' ability to volatilize mercury they have taken up through their roots and release it through their leaves and stems, researchers at the University of California Berkeley and the University of Central Florida have inserted genes into the chloroplasts of tobacco plants. The research can be useful to improve tolerance and detoxification of mercury in plants that could be used to remediate mercury-contaminated soil.
