Title

Coherent Optical Transmission For Digital And Analog Applications

Abstract

Coherent optical communication has attracted significant attention in recent years since the introduction of digital signal processing (DSP) for carrier phase estimation [1, 2]. It was realized early on that, with coherent detection, linear transmission impairments fiber including chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode dispersion can be compensated [3, 4]. This is made possible because coherent detection can recover the complex field of the lightwave. Furthermore, DSP can be used for polarization management which is also necessary for coherent detection [5, 6]. © 2009 IEEE.
