Title

Working With Caregivers Of Infants And Toddlers With Special Needs From Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds

Abstract

As the number of children and adults from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds living in the United States increases during the 21st century, the number of CLD infants and toddlers with special needs and their caregivers who will need early intervention services is also expected to increase. As a result, educators and interventionists will need to be cognizant of factors that can influence CLD caregivers' decisions to participate in services. Educators and interventionists will also need to know and use skills and behaviors that are culturally and linguistically sensitive when interacting with CLD caregivers. Without such familiarity, caregivers may not be full partners in the intervention process, thereby reducing the efficacy of such services.
