Front Porch Sunshine: Extending The Benefits Of Solar Water Heating To Low-Income Households

Abstract

In 2002, the Florida Solar Energy Research and Education Foundation (FlaSEREF), the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) and the Florida Energy Office (FEO), in cooperation with the Florida Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), initiated solar water heater installations in low income communities throughout Florida. This program is modeled after the Solar Weatherization Assistance Program (SWAP), which was successfully piloted in Florida in the mid-1990s. Known as Front Porch Sunshine, the program works hand-in-hand with Governor Jeb Bush's community revitalization initiative, Front Porch Florida, by extending the environmental and economic benefits of solar to Florida's neediest citizens. There is no cost to the Front Porch Community or the client for receiving these solar water-heating systems. Nine of twenty targeted communities have commenced installations. Thus far, response has been very positive, particularly after the initial systems are installed in each community. The 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons have disrupted plans for installations in several other designated communities.
