Title
Comparing Leachate Recirculation Strategies At Bioreactor Landfills: Vertical Versus Horizontal Injection Wells
Abstract
Two major leachate recirculation system techniques, namely, vertical injection wells and horizontal injection trenches are discussed. The study shows that horizontal systems are good for as-built bioreactor landfills, whereas vertical systems are used for retrofit bioreactor landfills. Vertical wells are installed after a fill has reached grade. This technique works well for retrofit systems or for landfills where minimum intrusion into landfill operations is desired. Horizontal wells can be installed as the landfill is filled with waste. This technique offers several advantages with respect to gas collection and early leachate recirculation.
