A Shock-Tube Facility For Spray-Combustion Studies And Reacting-Flow Visualization
Abstract
A new shock-tube facility has been designed and constructed in the Mechanical, Materials & Aerospace Engineering department at the University of Central Florida. This shock tube, intended primarily for heterogeneous reacting-flow experiments, has an 8.89-cm square test section to allow the usage of flat windows for easy optical access. The new pressure-driven shock tube was characterized over a wide range of reflectedshock temperatures (≈500-4300 K) and pressures (0.9-8.4 atm) using helium as the driver gas and N2, air, or Ar as the driven gas. The current application of the heterogeneous facility is the study of liquid-fuel sprays in the high-temperature environment behind the reflected shock wave. A fast-response fuel injector was mounted in the endwall of the shock tube for this purpose. Characterization and demonstration tests of the injection technique in both cold- and hot-flow environments are underway, some results of which are presented. © 2003 by the authors.
