Abstract

A request by a supervisory level paraprofessional at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Library presented a challenging and unique opportunity for both the paraprofessional and the Library to do what had never been done before-allow staff to telecommute coast to coast-from Seattle, Washington to Orlando, Florida. Not only was this a first for the Cataloging Department, but it was also the UCF Human Resources Department's first approval of such a request. A joint effort was required to set up every step from the proposal to the implementation. The team was comprised of Cataloging Department staff and librarians, Systems & Technology Department, and Library Administration. This paper focuses on the: (1) decision-making process, (2) approval process, (3) operational plan development, (4) implementation of the plan, (5) telecommuting experience, and (6) impact on the employee at the telecommuting site and on workflow in Cataloging. © 2001 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
