Title
Palladium Deposition On Proton Exchange Membranes For Direct Methanol Fuel Cells
Abstract
Complete membrane electrode assembly made by screen-printing was tested for methanol crossover, membrane resistance, and performance. At 30°C, the methanol crossover was 70 mA/sq cm for the Nafion® 117 membrane; however, the crossover was reduced to 40 mA/sq cm for the Pd-deposited Nafion® 117 membrane at the same temperature. The effect of the Pd-deposited membrane on methanol crossover reduction was even more apparent at higher temperature. The deposition of palladium onto the Nafion® membrane did not change its resistance and conductivity. The voltage gain with Pd-deposited Nafion® 117 membrane was due to reduced methanol crossover. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the ACS Fuel Chemistry Meeting (Washington, DC Fall 2005).
