Title
Fostering Team Effectiveness In Organizations: Toward An Integrative Theoretical Framework
Abstract
The multilevel integrative framework described in this section offers researchers and practitioners a useful, yet simple, heuristic that can be called on to quickly understand the most important aspects of interdependent performance. The integrative framework illustrated in Figure 12 above is intended to highlight often-ignored issues in team-effectiveness research. Specifically, our hybrid framework advances the science of teamwork by (1) adopting a cognitive approach to framing the dynamic and multilevel nature of team effectiveness from an IPO perspective, (2) illustrating some the interdependencies between team members' competencies and team-level competencies, and (3) describing key antecedents to team performance and effectiveness. On further conceptual refinement, we expect that our hybrid integrative framework will be useful in (1) defining a nomological net of teamwork, (2) formulating empirically testable propositions, and (3) designing interventions to facilitate human-capital management. With regard to this latter point, in the next section we review the practical implications of our hybrid framework for performance measurement, training, and staffing teams.
