Title

Effect Of Inhibitors On Iron, Copper, And Lead Release In A Changing Water Environment

Abstract

Three different finished waters (ground, surface, and reverse osmosis desalinated water) were blended in varying ratios and introduced into a large-scale pilot distribution system (PDS). PVC (6-inch), lined cast iron (6-inch), unlined cast iron (6-inch), and galvanized steel (2-inch) aged pipes (40+ years) with accumulated scales were excavated from actual distribution systems and used to construct the PDS. The PDS was operated continuously with a 2-day hydraulic residence time under laminar flow conditions to simulate worst case conditions. Water was also passed through copper pipes with embedded lead coupons to hydraulically simulate residential systems. Data were collected to assess iron, copper, and lead release with and without inhibitors. Inhibitor addition and pH elevation were found to achieve a significant mitigation of copper and lead release, but only a modest improvement in control of iron. © 2007 ASCE.
