Validation Of Crowd Simulations

Abstract

To date no numerical technique for validating crowd control models has been proposed. Usually subject matter experts "look at" the simulations and decide if what they are observing "appears" reasonable or not. One reason for this has been the inability to gather quantitative data from either actual crowd footage or simulations of crowds. Since this problem is being solved by Kaup et al, it now becomes possible to consider analytical validation of crowd simulations. In this paper, we propose a quantitative approach to measuring whether or not a simulation is a valid representation of a given crowd scenario and show by example that it can differentiate among various crowd dynamics. Additionally, this methodology will be useful in determining correct parameter settings for specific crowd characteristics.
