Abstract
High biréfringent nematic liquid crystal materials become currently more important group of LC materials for different photonic applications such as laser beam steering devices, tunable-focus lenses, dynamic scene and cinema projectors, cholesteric LC lasers, telecom variable optical attenuators, fast operating displays and cholesteric displays. Mesogenic and physicochemical properties (mainly birefringence, dielectric anisotropy and viscosity) of alky I or alkoxy biphenyls, terphenyls, quaterphenyls derivatives having cyano or isothiocyanato or fluoro terminal group as well as their analogues with triple bond or COO bridge between the benzene rings and laterally substituted by one, two, three or four fluorine atoms will be shortly reviewed. © 2008 SID.
