Abstract
The modern era of irregular warfare demands that today' s military personnel have a sophisticated understanding of culture. Toward that end, new simulation-based training technologies are being developed to support Human, Social, Cultural Behavior (HSCB) instruction. This chapter describes one such system, called AVATAR, which supports tactical sociocultural training, cultural analysis, and knowledge elicitation. AVATAR employs a role-play approach that enables trainees to practice interacting with individuals from other cultures.
